Eye care professionals specialize in understanding how the human eye really works, as well as diseases and conditions that affect your vision—many of which do not always have obvious symptoms. Eye doctors know how age and risk factors affect vision over time for young and old, and they understand the benefits and features of corrective lenses, both as eyeglass lenses and contact lenses.
Our optometrist take the time to explain the results of your eye exam, describe your options and listen to your eye care needs. Because maintaining good eye health is an ongoing partnership, we encourage you to ask questions and share your health information, which could be vital to monitoring, diagnosing and treating potential vision problems.
Meet our doctor:
Dr. Cobb grew up in Southeast Kansas near Joplin, MO. Growing up nearsighted and watching his uncle slowly go blind from glaucoma and a retinal detachment, Dr. Cobb developed an interest in optometry at an early age. He attended Pittsburg State University in his hometown for three years before moving to Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, OK where, in 1986, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology (Cellular emphasis) with minors in Math and Chemistry.
Dr. Cobb was accepted to both Houston & Memphis College's of Optometry. Dr Cobb's love for the South and bar-be-que caused him to attend SCO in Memphis, where he earned his Doctor of Optometry degree in 1990. While a student at SCO he served two terms as the AOSA Trustee, was on the Dean's List multiple times, and was selected to be included in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Dr. Cobb passed his National Boards and has held licenses in Alabama, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Tennessee, and Virginia. He has also been a member of AOA / ALOA, NAOA, and the AOS since graduation.
Dr. Cobb moved to Alabama in 1990 where he completed another Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a Physics minor and started his practice in Huntsville. Over the next 18 years he worked in various commercial optometric practices in Huntsville, Decatur, and Blue Springs, MO. Seeking a practice where he could act as the patient's doctor and advisor in the exam room as well as the patient's advocate on the retail side, Dr. Cobb started Heritage Eye Care on County Line Road "cold" in 2008.
He is active in the community and regularly provides vision screenings at local schools as well as supporting the Eyes of Hope program. His wife, Lori, is a Counselor at Pope John Paul II Catholic High School. His son, Wesley, recently became the second Eagle Scout in the Cobb household. He graduated from WCA and will start at UAH in the fall of 2011. Dr. Cobb also served as an adult leader and volunteer for the Boy Scouts with nearly 20 years of activity. He is also currently an NRA Certified Firearms Instructor in 2 disciplines and was certified by Olympic Gold Medalist Gary Anderson as a CMP GSM Master Instructor.
